The 9th China International Fair for Investment & Trade (CIFIT) is China's
sole nation-wide international investment promotion event focusing on pushing
forward bilateral investments. The annual CIFIT, which is held in Xiamen during
Sept.8-11, is sponsored by China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), and
co-sponsored by United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD),
United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), International
Finance Corporation (IFC) and World Association of Investment Promotion
Agencies (WAIPA). The numerous CIFIT members from Provincial Governments
throughout China, relevant Ministries, Commissions, and Offices under China's
Central Government, as well as national trade associations organize delegations
to participate in the Fair.
In March 2005, CIFIT was approved by UFI (the Global Association of the
Exhibition Industry). With its themes of “Introducing FDI” and “Going Global”,
CIFIT bases itself on China’s policy guidelines concerning absorption of FDI,
publicizing China’s policies, laws and environments of foreign investment while
encouraging Chinese enterprises to “go global”. Foreign Governmental
Institutions, Commercial Associations and enterprises are invited to introduce
their foreign investment policies, investment environments and investment
projects, and to network with potential Chinese enterprises. The "International
Investment Forum" and dozens of seminars on hot investment issues as well as
the matchmaking symposia held during CIFIT have contributed to the growing
popularity and strategic significance of this international investment venue.
The ASEM Trade and Investment Exposition will be held concurrently with the
coming CIFIT. At the 5th ASEM Summit held in Hanoi in 2004, Chinese Premier Wen
Jiabao put forward a proposal to host an ASEM Expo on trade and investment in
2005 in China. The initiative was approved by the leaders as a new ASEM
initiative. The Expo aims at establishing a platform for interaction and
cooperation between government officials and business communities as well as
between business communities themselves. Through the introduction of ASEM
members’ trade and investment policies can display the new technology of
various industries and exchange the views between business people and
government officials.
Also held together with CIFIT is First Taiwan Strait Tourism Exposition (TSTE).
TSTE is organized by National Tourism Bureau, Fujian Provincial Government, and
co-organized by Fujian Provincial Tourism Bureau and Xiamen Government, with
the assistance of relevant agencies from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. For the
ninth CIFIT, which was held in 2005, 12,015 businesspersons and guests from
more than 125 countries and regions came to Xiamen .1053 contracts and
agreements were signed at the fair involving foreign capital of USD 12.243
billion.
