The 2017 BRICS Countries E-commerce Forum was held in Xiamen, Fujian province on Sept 19 as part of the China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT).

Renowned people from political, commercial, and academic circles from home and abroad are invited to discuss the development of e-commerce and the cooperation among BRICS countries in e-commerce.

Zhu Hongren, standing vice-chairman of China Enterprise Confederation, believes that the rapid development in e-commerce and other fields will become the new driving force for the increase of global trade.

Report on Chinese E-commerce (2016-2017) released by China Electronic Commerce Association (CECA) at the forum states that the trade volume of e-commerce in China reached 26.1 trillion yuan ($3.94 trillion) in 2016.

Head of the CECA said that China is now taking this historic opportunity of rapid e-commerce development to expand its market around the world.

Wang Jinzhen, vice-chairman of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, pointed out that the increased potential consumers and internet users, the improved disposable income and supporting facilities are the important factors that rapidly promote e-commerce development in BRICS countries.

An E-commerce Development Report on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in BRICS Countries was also released at the forum by Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.

The report reveals that the number of netizens from the BRICS countries exceeds 1.46 billion and the number of online shoppers totals 720 million, both accounting for 42.7 percent of the global ones.

Igor Zubov from Russia Remote Trade Association said that there is a strong complementarity among BRICS countries in cross-border e-commerce and he expressed the intention to cooperate with Chinese enterprises so as to promote the e-commerce development in Russia.

However, there are still some common challenges faced by the small and medium-sized enterprises from BRICS countries in regards to information, supervision, talents and infrastructure construction.

Shen Kaiyan from SASS suggested that the BRICS countries should strengthen their cooperation in e-commerce in infrastructure construction, technological innovation and talents training.
