The information conference for the 2018 China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT) was held in Guangzhou, the capital of South China’s Guangdong province, on June 15, the third such event after Beijing and Shanghai.

The CIFIT will this year be held in Xiamen, Fujian province, from Sept 8 to 11.

The Guangzhou conference was attended by more than 430 representatives from Chinese local governments’ investment promotional organizations, embassies and consulates in Guangzhou, business associations, and investment and finance institutions from China and abroad.

During the conference, He Maochun, counselor with China’s State Council, shared his opinion on the current economic situations at home and abroad.

Deng Xiaoli from the Yunnan Department of Commerce, Harley Seyedin, chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in South China, Hernán Jaramillo, the consul-general of Chile in Guangzhou, and Hong Benzhu, deputy director of Xiamen bureau of commerce talked about their gains after attending previous CIFIT annual investment fairs.

Roadshows for approximately 50 projects involving cultural tourism, intelligent manufacturing, software outsourcing and other industries were presented during the project match-making activity, achieving more than 76 billion yuan ($12 billion) worth of investment.

This year is the first to implement the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and marks the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up. Focusing on integration into the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the 2018 CIFIT will focus on cooperation with the countries and regions along the Maritime Silk Road.

To establish an exhibition area exclusively for countries along the Maritime Silk Road

An exhibition area of 20,000 square meters is expected to be established exclusively for the countries and regions involved in the Maritime Silk Road where more than 20 countries from ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) will be invited to set up booths.

To strengthen two-way investment with countries along the Maritime Silk Road

The management committee of the 2018 CIFIT plans to sort out a group of projects related to Maritime Silk Road countries and regions to arrange roadshows and the release of investment plans for them.

To organize a series of activities centering around the Maritime Silk Road

A forum on the BRI, a conference on economic cooperation between Fujian and the countries and regions involved in the Maritime Silk Road, and a sci-tech forum among Maritime Silk Road countries and regions will be held during the 2018 CIFIT.

Last year, the fair facilitated the signing of 1,577 investment projects worth 532.7 billion yuan ($82 billion) and attracted more than 100,000 domestic and foreign business representatives from 4,000 domestic and foreign enterprises, 700 business groups and 40 multinational corporations from 107 countries and regions.

The BRI is a development strategy proposed by China's president that focuses on connectivity and cooperation between Eurasian countries. The development strategy is based on two core arteries: the Silk Road Economic Belt (the Belt) and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road (the Road). The Belt is a land-based route connecting China with Europe via Central Asia and the Middle East while the Road is a sea-based route linking China’s southern coast to east Africa and the Mediterranean.
